Shelley Niro: Buffet
September 2 – 30, 2016
Northern Front Studio
#110 2237 2nd Ave in Waterfront Station (beside Boston Pizza)
The exhibition, Shelley Niro: Buffet brings together three works produced by Shelley Niro since 2012. Niro is a senior artist from the Mohawk Nation of the Haudenosaunee and a member of the Turtle Clan, Bay of Quinte Mohawks. She was raised at the Six Nations of the Grand River, in south western Ontario. She now lives in Brantford, Ontario. From the beginning of her career, Niro has recognized the need for First Nations people to see themselves in the photographic (or filmed) record. In this exhibition Niro is continuing the conversation of the difficult history of Indigenous people on this land and the aggressive erasure of individuals, resources and culture.
